Magic 13th.

Although I am not a science fiction fan, there are some movies of this genre I admire and watch over and over again. One of my favourites is The Thirteenth Floor and I can't understand why it's not a more popular film.

Had it been made with more famous people, it could have become one of the most important Sci-Fis of the turn of the century but for some reason it didn't (I guess the fact that it came out the same year as The Matrix didn't help either).

The Thirteenth Floor has it all: mystery, drama, action and an incredibly interesting story. It raises ethical questions and is extremely entertaining, intriguing and exciting from the first minute to the last.

Filled with beautiful pictures of past, present and future (being the old-fashioned person that I am, I obviously love the 30s scenes the most) and a brilliant idea, it almost makes me pissed at how overlooked this movie is. So the actors are not A-list stars. But do we really need them? The Thirteenth Floor is perfect without them as well. Maybe even better.

It really would have deserved more than what it got - the sad example of how the Hollywood system fails again and again because it only has eyes for money and the stars.

What about Inception?

Inception was way overrated... I liked the idea but it was too farfetched... I prefer movies that look effortless, natural in their unnaturalness. Plus I found it a bit boring as well.

I understand what you are trying to say. But do you think that it is reasonable to expect a movie like Inception to be natural in its unnaturalness?

I don't really wish to comment about whether this film was overrated or not, as this addresses how fashionable it is rather than the film itself.

It seems to me, though, that the goal of the movie was to enter a territory where one is permitted to "play around" with concepts because it is situated in dreams, a place where the most implausible things can happen.

I am not a big fan of fantasy/sci fi films, though. Films and novels rooted in everyday reality is what I like more. Come to think of it, I would say that a film which nicely fits into your idea of natural in its unnaturalness is Stranger Than Fiction.

I do realize that the goal was to enter the territory of dreams and as much as I love this idea and find it probably more interesting than any other sci-fi topic, I still didn't like Inception. I expected something different, something more effortless and less profit-hunter.
I do believe however that films about dreams are extremely interesting and I always end up watching these films - after all, the closest most of us gets to something so hard to understand and so mesmerizing is through dreams.
